Banks and businesses stay open; the usual traffic jams clog up the streets; children go to school. [...] Baghdad has a sizable Christian minority, who do of course take the day off from work and school, and even Muslims observe Christmas as an informal holiday, a bit like how Halloween is celebrated in the States. Geography works against us; Iraq is big and attacks and helicopter crashes and so on happen seemingly at random all over the country.
