EU puts piracy under observation


September 26, 2008 Plans for a European piracy observatory were agreed to by EU industry ministers meeting in Brussels on Friday as part of a package of measures aimed at stemming the tide of fakes and copies that have ravaged the movie and music industry. The ministers also agreed to boost cooperation between national enforcement agencies, launch public awareness campaigns and develop new anti-counterfeiting technologies for customs authorities. The move came as EU trade chief Peter Mandelson warned Chinese leaders in Beijing that government failure to enforce laws against piracy had triggered sliding European investment rates in China.
