There is mocking and edge aplenty, to be sure, though it's clear the writers and producers (Spade among them, along with such exec producers as Bernie Brillstein and Gavin Palone) labored to find 22 minutes of material.
Taped in front of a live audience, "Showbiz" follows the snarky, take-no-prisoners sensibility of host Spade, who fronted the "Hollywood Minute" segment on "Saturday Night Live" back in the day.
[...] predictably, the Comedy Central effort is funniest when Spade is simply sitting at a desk pummeling the guilty with one-liners following brief clips and deadpan news nuggets, like this one aimed at new parents Britney Spears and Kevin Federline: "They were going to name their kid after where he was conceived, but it was too hard to say Olive Garden Bathroom Floor."
