A very worthy contender for an Oscar nomination but probably not a huge commercial hit for domestic distributor the Walt Disney Co., "Spirited" is aimed principally at young girls, but the artistry and imagination can captivate viewers of any age. Opening today in 10 cities on 26 screens, including a three-week run at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood -- which classily features two shows a week of the original Japanese-language version with English subtitles -- "Spirited" will expand its run to more cities in coming weeks. While destined to reach many more domestic moviegoers than Miyazaki's other films of the past decade, the real payoff will come with rentals and retail sales sometime next year.
