In the case of Paul Thomas Anderson's "Punch-Drunk Love," a delightfully idiosyncratic romantic comedy that manages to give convention a swift jab in the gut while still pushing all of the genre's requisite buttons, the stimulus came from a Time Magazine article about one David Phillips.
Clocking in at a remarkably restrained 90-odd minutes and boasting a terrific Adam Sandler lead performance, the gorgeously shot picture could also emerge as a decent boxoffice draw, particularly among younger, hipper viewers.
Sandler, impressively making the move to more mature roles without losing any of his goofy appeal in the transition, plays the Pudding Guy in question.
