The environmental disaster movie, the last of a trio of tentpole entries during May, took top boxoffice honors for an opening weekend this year thanks mainly to assembling what is considered a record number of day-and-date offshore bookings: 100 countries plus 10 affiliated territories.
The first of the May blockbusters, "Van Helsing," took in $55.3 million from 41 markets on its opening weekend, and "Troy" recorded $54.7 million from 47 markets.
Fox's worldwide opening blast included China, which gathered $1.7 million from 220 screens, marked as the company's biggest opening weekend ever in the market.
