Real D, a 3-D digital exhibition vendor, is putting up its own capital to install 100 silver screens that play both digital 3-D and standard 35mm films, in addition to hardware and software to modify the digital projectors for 3-D exhibition.
The hefty financial stakes involved in releasing a movie in digital 3-D speak to both Disney's determination to release a computer-animated film successfully without the help of the Pixar brand name and to Dolby's need to establish a footprint in the digital cinema landscape.
"Walt Disney pioneered many technological breakthroughs and set an uncompromising goal for his studio to constantly push the envelope to offer a superior moviegoing experience," said Dick Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Studios.
