The sushi chef/matchmaker is Mamoru Omae, a successful Tokyo chef who lost everything including the love of his life when the Japanese economy tanked. The Kennedy/Marshall version uses the real-life scenario as a jumping-off point and takes the chef to New York. By successfully matchmaking various patrons of his restaurant and seeing the love he helps create, the chef is able to rediscover the meaning of life and love for himself.
