Years in the making, "The Fast Runner" (Atanarjuat) is a slow-moving experience that has a kicker of a final hour. The first major feature in the Inuktitut language and winner of many kudos, including the Camera d'or at Cannes in 2001 and six Canadian Genie Awards, the Lot 47 release is nearly three hours long and limited to adventuresome cineastes longing to visit the frozen tundra, where the Inuit and ancestors have lived for thousands of years. Written by the late Paul Apak Angilirq and directed by Zacharias Kunuk, in his feature debut, "Runner" is based on an ancient story set in the pre-Columbian era kept alive by the Inuit oral tradition.
