Passover Seders can feel like lengthy affairs, but it's doubtful that any have felt quite as painful as the one depicted in "When Do We Eat?" An indie ethnic comedy clearly hoping to become the Jewish equivalent to "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," this well-timed offering, which arrived in time for Passover, is unlikely to have that sort of crossover appeal, or any appeal at all, for that matter.
Among those on hand are a gruff father (Michael Lerner), so assimilated he manufactures Christmas ornaments; a tough-love grandfather (Jack Klugman, a pleasure to once again see on the big screen), perpetually ready to flee the Nazis; an eager-to-please second wife (Lesley Ann Warren); a yuppie son turned Hasid (Max Greenfield); a sexy, celebrity publicist cousin (Mili Avital); a lesbian daughter (Meredith Scott Lynn) and her black lover (Cynda Williams); another daughter who's a sex therapist (Shiri Appleby); and two more sons, one autistic (Adam Lamberg) and the other a druggie (Ben Feldman).
[...] mainly the action stays at the dinner table, and suffice it to say that the painfully unfunny dialogue is enough to make you fondly reminisce about even your most strained family get-together.
