The unsightly portion is provided by the constant intrusion of a short action film created for the docu meant to show how all the advance prep work figures into the end product, but the cheesy special effects and robotic dialogue keep getting in the way of the real stuff.
Directed by martial artist/actor Robin Shou (the "Mortal Kombat" movies), the docu is at its most effective profiling both industry veterans such as Sammo Hung and Lau Gar Leung and ambitious young newcomers who wear their assorted scars and fractures like badges of honor.
Of particular historical interest is the origin of the stunt work that took root at the Peking Opera School, where future martial arts greats Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan perfected their moves while under the strict watch of the school's highly demanding teachers.
