Exploring the bond between two families -- one Israeli, one Palestinian -- filmmaker Danae Elon strips away the dogma and charged emotions that enmesh most discussions of the Middle East.
Danae is the only child of liberal intellectuals (her father, author Amos Elon, is a prominent critic of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians); Musa, the father of 11 children, approaches life philosophically.
Danae initially locates two of those sons, Khalid and Naser, in Paterson, N.J. Musa, still living in the Palestinian village of Battir, eventually makes his way past curfews and roadblocks for a reunion in the U.S. A compelling screen presence, he emerges as an Old World patriarch in the noblest sense, having worked 18-hour days in order to send his eight sons to the states for college educations.
