Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Films inks HBO deal


December 16, 2008 After 20 years at ABC, Winfrey's Harpo Films has inked a three-year exclusive deal with HBO to develop and produce scripted programming, including series, miniseries, movies and documentaries. Harpo also made its first foray into unscripted programming on ABC this year with "Oprah's Big Give," produced by Harpo Prods. With the longform genre close to extinction at the broadcast networks, it also is understandable for Winfrey to look for a new partner, with the dominant player in the field, HBO, being a natural choice.
