Filmmaker John Hughes dies at 59
August 06, 2009 John Hughes, the Chicago-based filmmaker who redefined the teen movie in the '80s with his sympathetic comedies about the joys and heartbreak of high school life, died Thursday of a heart attack in New York. Hughes suffered the heart attack while taking a morning walk while visiting family members in Manhattan, his representatives said. With films like "Sixteen Candles" (1984), "The Breakfast Club" (1985) and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" (1986), all of which he wrote and directed, Hughes treated teens with respect.
