Newcomers snubbed by Munich jury
July 01, 2009 The jury for this year's newcomer awards at the Munich International Film Festival snubbed all hopefuls -- saying none of the young German filmmakers in the running were up to snuff. The jury -- which includes Oscar-winner Caroline Link ("Nowhere in Africa"), actor Maximilian Bruckner ("Sophie Scholl") and producer Uli Aselmann ("Winter Journey"), could not find a single candidate this year worthy of the €20,000 ($28,000) producer prize or the €10,000 ($14,000) screenplay award. The snub prompted Munich festival director Andreas Strohl to defend the festival's selection of German films.
