Visually sumptuous but dramatically muddled and confusing, "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" ultimately comes across as a soporific costume drama featuring a gallery of miscast stars, including Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel in a far cry from their "Mean Streets."
Set in 18th century Peru during the Spanish Inquisition, the story chronicles the situations of five victims who had the misfortune to be crossing the titular bridge across a great ravine just as it collapses.
