The band may hail from New York City and bear more of a physical resemblance to the Velvet Underground than to Hollywood's glitzier musical pedigree, but its performance delivered a 21st century makeover of the best that any of the Sunset Strip's iconic acts had to offer. Hammond traded licks with Nick Valensi throughout the 21-song set, which featured eight cuts each from the band's debut effort, "Is This It," and their new release, "First Impressions of Earth," a meager four numbers from their sophomore album "Room on Fire" and a cover of the Ramones' "Life's a Gas." Lit in brilliant hues of color reflected off two white screens with their humble stacks of amps on either side of drummer Fab Moretti, the five-piece filled every bit of the arena-size stage with a cool confidence and spontaneous energy, ably retaining an electric dynamic and intimate charm most often reserved for smaller venues.
