By now it's an age-old refrain, but this softer-edged take on "Crossover Dreams" has a warm affection for its music and thoughtful performances from leads John Leguizamo and Elizabeth Pena that help compensate for that familiarity, not to mention a distracting blending of genres at the expense of a sturdy dramatic foundation. Opening today in select markets, this Sony Picture, released through Destination Films, will primarily strike a chord with Latina-skewing audiences with minimal crossover potential. Things prove to be tougher going than he imagined, and he's about to run out of hope when his friend, Zorro (Nestor Serrano), an NPR DJ, persuades him to enter the "Chance of a Lifetime Mystery Musician Contest," a Latino band competition in which the winner performs as the opening act for a famous mystery musician.
