Actually, the more proper antecedents for "Wrong Turn" are such '70s-era slasher pictures as "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "The Last House on the Left," which this derivative effort manages to emulate without improving on in the slightest. The film, which opened Friday without being screened for the press (surprise), will attract little interest considering the high level of competition in the marketplace and should soon assume its rightful place amid the hundreds of similar efforts on display in the horror section of your local video store. The chief interest of the film lies in the makeup effects of co-producer and multi-Oscar winner Stan Winston, who has designed some quite nifty and convincing monster get-ups for the villains who terrorize the requisite group of highly attractive and oh-so-dispensable young victims.
