Festival officials, including fest director Christian Gaines and director of programming Nancy Collet, announced the lineup at a special event Wednesday night at Cinespace in Hollywood.
In addition to the previously announced galas and tributes -- which include showings of Nigel Cole's "Calendar Girls," Vadim Perelman's "House of Sand and Fog," Patty Jenkins' "Monster" and Norman Jewison's "The Statement," AFI Fest 2003 will show films in the following sections: eight in the Special Screenings section, one in Preservation Spotlight, 14 in the International Feature Competition, 12 in the International Documentary Competition, 36 in the International Shorts Competition, 10 in American Directions, eight in Asian New Classics, six in this year's inaugural Beyond Conflict, Focus on the Middle East, 12 in European Showcase, eight in the Latin Cinema Series and 10 in the Made in Germany program.
Battling it out in the international feature competition will be Alison Peebles' "Afterlife," Milos Petricic's "An Almost Ordinary Story," Morten Tyldum's "Buddy," John Deery's "Conspiracy of Silence," Didier Ouenangare and Bassek ba Kobhio's "The Forest," Anders Thomas Jensen's "The Green Butchers," Sebastien Rose's "How My Mother Gave Birth to Me During Her Menopause," Hugo Rodriguez's "Nicotina," Azazel Jacobs' "Nobody Needs to Know," Natasha Arthy's "Old, New, Borrowed and Blue," Tony McNamara's "The Rage in Placid Lake," Siegfried's "Sansa," Ulrike Schweiger's "Twinni" and Spiro Scimone's "Two Friends."
