Q&A: Danny Elfman

August 14, 2008 After two characteristically playful, full-bodied orchestral scores for the back-to-back Universal summer releases "Wanted" and "Hellboy II," Elfman did a complete about-face, calling on his remarkable versatility to compose the somber, trenchant score for Errol Morris' unflinching Iraq documentary "Standard Operating Procedure." [...] came his first ballet, "Rabbit and Rogue," a collaboration with choreography icon Twyla Tharp that had its West Coast premiere at the Orange County Performing Arts Center on Aug. 6 after a successful run at the Met in June. Not bad for a high school dropout who didn't even pick up his first instrument -- the violin no less -- until he was 16.
