Hill, Holliday Taps Herbert for Strategy

March 11, 2010

Boston-based Hill, Holliday has appointed Dirk Herbert as the agency's chief strategy officer. He will report to shop president Karen Kaplan. Herbert joins from Hill's IPG sibling McCann Erickson in San Francisco, where he served as the head of strategy and planning on Microsoft's portfolio of global IT campaigns and HP's consumer PC business. Prior to joining McCann, he co-led the strategy practice on the global IBM account at Ogilvy & Mather. On the client side, he has held senior-level strategy roles at companies like Apple and Disney.

[X+1] Makes Additions

Audience targeting platform firm [x+1] of New York has announced several new hires and promotions. Mike Dillon (shown), former vp, brand activation marketing at Pepsi N.A., has been named vp, sales for [x+1]'s CPG Connect solution. At Pepsi, Dillon managed a $65 million budget and oversaw development of national promotions, including Super Bowl initiatives and tie-ins with the film Transformers and Madden Gaming/EA Sports. Dave Pollet has been promoted from national sales director to vp, sales. From 2001-05, he was vp, online marketing for Bank of America. Greg Reitman joined [x+1] as director of marketing. Most recently, he was owner and freelance marketing consultant at 30 Second Life Media, where he developed marketing strategies for authors, musicians, filmmakers and others in the creative fields.

Greene Returns to Deutsch in New Role

Cheryl Greene has been hired in a new role as partner, director of business Initiatives at IPG's Deutsch in New York. She joins from MDC's Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal &  Partners, where she was managing partner, director of integrated brand strategies. Greene, who had worked with Deutsch from 1992-2008, was part of the executive leadership team that helped transform the shop from boutique status to an integrated marketing provider. Her last role at the agency was brand strategy advisor. In her new role, Greene will lead all strategic business development and new go-to-market efforts, reporting to Deutsch CEO Val DiFebo.

Joe Page Joins Media Horizons

Direct marketing agency Media Horizons in Norwalk, Conn., has named Joe Page as its new vice president, creative director. The shop believes Page's hire is a coup as he has more than 20 years as a cd under belt, including tenures Scholastic and Digitas. For the past two years, Page was an independent consultant in the areas of creative, new business development and marketing strategy for AmeriHealth, Charter Communications, Savin, Wells Fargo, Whole Foods and XM Satellite Radio.

Matt Herrmann has been appointed executive vice president, chief strategy officer, McCann Erickson West. In this role, Herrmann will oversee the agency's strategic practice in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Said Herrmann: "This is a unique opportunity to custom build a new strategic practice and agency model focused on producing more innovative communications products." Herrmann joins McCann from Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, where he held the position of deputy director, brand strategy. During his five years at Goodby, Herrmann led brand strategy and creative development on Haagen-Dazs, Rolling Rock, Quaker Foods, eBay and Hyundai. Prior to that time, he served in a senior account planning capacity at Bartle Bogle Hegarty in New York.

Euro RSCG PR's Strategy Includes Donovan, Meckel

Havas' Euro RSCG Worldwide Public Relations said it has appointed Matt Donovan chief strategic officer and Karina Meckel director of strategic planning. Donovan (pictured) had been strategy chief for Euro RSCG's Asia-Pacific ops. He now reports to Marian Salzman, president of the PR group's North American operations, while Meckel reports to both Donovan and Salzman. The new recruits join from the Euro RSCG ad agency side of the business. Donovan has worked with such blue-chip brands as Nike, French's, Volvo, Gatorade, Jaguar, Dell, Monster.com and AOL. Meckel served as lead planner on the Nestle Frozen Foods business and planner on the Charles Schwab account.

Pele Cortizo-Burgess has joined WPP's Grey in New York as executive vice president, chief strategy officer, a new position. Cortizo-Burgess comes to Grey from ITV in London, the biggest commercial television network in the U.K. During his three-year tenure, he set up a key initiative to promote innovation and content development: ITV Imagine. He was later named director of creative strategy for ITV Studios and was responsible for helping create the content maker's global identity that rolled out worldwide in 2009. His agency experience includes senior-level posts at FCB, TBWA\Chiat\Day and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners.

Bloom had been a vp at Spot Runner, while O'Brian has been vp of Eyeblaster's Asia-Pacific ops. "There was a clear opportunity in North America for Mick to lead Eyeblaster at the corporate level and for Andrew to grow the company's business model as an independent campaign management platform," said Gal Trifon, Eyeblaster CEO and co-founder. CD Gorton Joins Jacobson Rost

Independent marketing communications agency Jacobson Rost has added Tom Gorton as creative director. He will work primarily in the shop's Chicago office, reporting to CCO Steve Simoncic. Gorton most recently worked at Draftfcb as an associate cd, and prior to that held the same title at Leo Burnett. During his 13 years at Burnett, he worked on brands such as McDonald's, Kellogg's, Disney, Coca-Cola and Nintendo, among others. "Tom's veteran sensibilities and versatility working on everything from nationally acclaimed television commercials to interactive campaigns, in-store programs and all points between are a welcome addition to our creative accounts," said Jerry Flemma, president and chief operating officer for Jacobson Rost. He will identify, leverage and develop new communications tools and channels in the digital space. Miller's Growth Accelerates at MRM

Michael Miller has been promoted to evp, chief growth officer of MRM Worldwide. The move comes after a string of new business wins throughout the MRM network during his tenure, including The Home Depot; Century 21; Diageo (Crown Royal, Captain Morgan, Jose Cuervo, Bulleit, Smirnoff, and Zacapa); and iShares, among others. Miller joined MRM in January 2008 as evp, director of business development for MRM North America. His most recent success came in December, when MRM's New York office won digital and CRM duties on Home Depot. In his new role, Miller continues to report to MRM CEO Reuben Hendell, who said: "Michael's boundless energy and optimism are contagious, and luckily for us, he's been able to further inject our network with a can-do attitude during an especially challenging economic climate last year."

Catherine Heath has been named chief strategy officer for Modernista!, the independent agency in Boston. Heath brings a wealth of planning experience to the shop, having worked with global brands Microsoft, Skyy Vodka, Red Bull, Virgin, Jaguar, Audi and Cadbury Schweppes. She will lead planning strategy for all Modernista clients and report to agency president Matthew Charlton. "Catherine offers us a fantastic mixture of traditional brand thinking, understanding cutting edge technology and a command of new media behavior," said Charlton. MySpace has appointed Shari Friedman svp, advertising sales for its Western region. She previously led MySpace's entertainment sales organization. Prior to joining MySpace, Friedman spent six years at AOL, first as a top seller on the entertainment sales team, and later as regional sales director overseeing all movie and television business. In 2006, she was hired by Fox Interactive Media to build the entertainment sales practice at MySpace and IGN, and she helped raise the team to one of the top revenue producers in the industry.

Mullen said Dustin Johnson has joined the IPG shop in Boston as vice president of creative media integration with responsibility for fusing creative content with media distribution. Johnson comes to Mullen from indpenedent Modernista! in Boston, where he was director of engagement.
